The West Liberty volleyball team ended its regular season with a victory over Durant on Tuesday for senior night and splitting their four games in Cedar Rapids on Saturday with wins over Marion and Cedar Rapids Washington while falling to Pleasant Valley and Mount Vernon.

The Comets head toward the post season with conference tournament play and a first round regional matchup against Central Lee.

The final week of the season started on home court for the Comets as they welcomed the Wildcats.

The first set was a tight affair as the teams traded points before the Comets pulled away in the latter stages of the matchup to take a 25-19 first set.

The second set saw a better outing from the Comets, taking a 25-15 victory to go up 2-0 in the match.

The Wildcats weren’t going to let their hosts escape easily, as in the third set the teams continues to trade points before Durant captured a 27-25 victory to extend the match.

The Comets were able to put the Wildcats to bed in the fourth set, capturing a 25-22 victory sending off their four seniors in style.

On Saturday, the Comets headed to the typical final stop of the season, the Westside Invitational, hosted by Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

The Comets started their day off with a 2-1 victory over eighth-ranked Marion before being swept by Class 5A’s second ranked team in Pleasant Valley.

A convincing 2-0 handling of Cedar Rapids Washington saw the Comets head to the gold bracket to matchup against the top ranked 3A team from Mount Vernon.

The Mustangs were able to corral the Comets in the sweep, winning 25-19 and 25-15 as Pleasant Valley went on to capture the tournament title.

The Comets enter the post-season after receiving a third seed in their regional bracket featuring conference foes Wilton and Mid-Prairie, hitting the floor to start against Central Lee on Tuesday the 22nd.

If Wilton and West Liberty both win in the first round, the Beavers and Comets will meet in Wilton’s gym on Thursday the 24th.
