Comets beat West Branch but fall to Iowa City Regina

The West Liberty Volleyball team split the week last week, capturing a road win against West Branch but falling at home against Iowa City Regina in a matchup of ranked River Valley Conference rivals.

The Comets sit at 17-7 overall and look ahead to another ranked bout against Wilton on Thursday before heading to Western Dubuque Saturday for tournament play.

Last Tuesday (September 24) the Comets headed to West Branch to take on the Bears.

The Comets set the tone early as the ranked team entering the match and rolled through their hosts with a 25-13 victory in the opening set.

The second set saw a much tighter battle as the Bears managed to stay a thorn in the Comets’ side. West Liberty narrowly grabbed the second set 25-22.

The Comets completed the sweep in the final set, grabbing a 25-19 victory to end the night.

Junior Kaylee Pelzer led the road team with 11 kills while junior Sophie Buysse added eight and senior Ava Morrison tacked on six.

Sophomore Emma Yoder accounted for all 28 of her team’s assists. Buysse led the defense with 10 digs.

On Thursday, the Comets played host to Iowa City Regina.

The Regals managed to hold off the Comets in the opening set as the teams traded blows in a 25-21 opening set.

The Comets seemed to reclaim control of the match in the second set claiming a 25-14 victory.

The Comets’ good fortunes were short lived, as the Regals swiftly returned the favor with a 25-17 victory in the third set.

West Lliberty went on to lose a close fourth set 25-20, unable to defend home court against their ranked opponents.

Buysse (13 kills), Pelzer (12 kills) and Morrison (nine kills) once again set the tone on offense. Yoder contributed 34 assists.

Defensively, senior Gabriella Morales led the Comets with 17 digs while Buysse and freshman Emmee Wiele each tallied two blocks.

The Comets sit 17-7 on the season with just five events left on their schedule for the season. 

West Liberty will travel to Wilton on Thursday for a huge conference clash before heading to Western Dubuque High School for a Saturday invitational.
