Comets fall twice as 2023 comes to an end

Keokuk and West Branch got the better of West Liberty last week

The West Liberty boys basketball team fell in a pair on contests last week, first coming against Keokuk at home in non-conference play before falling to West Branch on the road Friday night.
The Comets currently sit at 1-5 on the season heading into winter break. 
Last Tuesday (Dec. 12), West Liberty matched up against Keokuk.
The Comets were able to keep the score close in the first and second quarters, training by nine heading into the break before the Chiefs were able to break through for 23 to the Comets’ 11 in the third quarter.
A 27-point outburst for the visitors in the final quarter made the final score look larger than the contest felt throughout the durations as the Comets left their home gym with an 82-50 defeat.
Senior Jayce McHugh led the Comets in scoring and on the glass, tallying 23 points and six rebounds in the loss. 
In Friday’s matchup, the Comets headed to West Branch.
The pair did battle in the first quarter, trading blows with offense as the Bears emerge from the slugfest leading 18-16. The torrid pace would not continue into the second quarter as the teams offenses slowed and the Comets heading to the break trailing 33-29. Following the break, the Bears were able to pull away to grab a 60-48 victory on their home court. 
Individual statistics for this game were unavailable as of Tuesday morning.
The Comets will return from break on January 6th, when they take on Hillcrest Academy, before taking on Columbus on the 8th and Durant on the 9th.
