The West Liberty Boys Basketball team dropped both of their opening matchups of the 2023-24 season against Cascade on the road Tuesday and Bellevue at home Friday.
The Comets kicked off their season against the Cougars.
The Comets were outscored 30-9 in the opening half of their season, before finding their footing in the second half, tallying an additional 26 points in the final two quarters.
The additional offense proved not enough for the Comets to overcome their halftime deficit and 23 points fourth from their hosts and they fell 60-35.
Jayce McHugh tallied 15 points for the Comets, the only member to reach double figures. Seth Axsom followed behind with eight points.
On Friday, West Liberty began the contest with continued offensive productions, as they outscored the visiting Comets of Bellevue 17-16 in the first quarter.
Bellevue settled in during the second quarter, tallying 19 points to the hosts’ 10 and taking a 35-27 lead into the half.
West Liberty managed to keep the contest within grasp despite being outscored 23-20 and trailing by 11 heading into the final quarter.
A final offensive explosion for Bellevue put the contest out of reach in the fourth quarter as the visitors outscored their foes 25-9.
West Liberty fell 85-56 in spite of a 26-point outing from Jayce McHugh and an additional nine from Seth Axsom to lead the Comets’ production.
The Comets will hit the road on Friday for more conference action against Tipton before playing hosts to Keokuk on Tuesday.
