The West Liberty boys’ basketball team split a pair of games last week, dropping a home game against Mid-Prairie before taking a road victory against Tipton on Friday to cap the week.

The Comets captured their first win of the season and currently hold a 1-3 record.

In the win against the Tigers, the Comets led after the first quarter following an impressive showing from the Comet offense to take a 15-13 lead.

Pace slowed to a crawl for both teams in the second quarter, but the Comets were able to maintain their lead 23-19.

The Tigers weren’t going to go down without a fight on their home court, putting together a 17-15 third quarter to cut the Comet lead to two heading in to the final quarter.

In the final period, the teams continued to trade blows at a high clip.

The Comets were able to cling to the advantage and escape with a one-point victory, 51-50. These teams will matchup against after the New Year.

In their first matchup of the Week on Tuesday, the Comets were able to stay in reach of the visiting Golden Hawks, trailing 11-10 after the opening quarter.

Both teams continued to stay even by scoring 12 points in the second quarter, and the Comets headed into the locker room trailing 23-22.

In a reversal of fortunes, the Golden Hawk offense would not be contained in the second half, as they outscored the Comets 24-13 and 22-16 in the final two quarter to pull away to a 69-51 victory.

The Comets will end the 2023 leg of their season with a trio of matchups against the Christmas break. First of which comes Friday at West Branch, then a non-conference matchup against Van Buren County on the road.

Finally, they will close out the 2023 schedule Tuesday night against Iowa City Regina.
