No homecoming magic this year for Comets

Posted

Last Friday, the West Liberty Comets football team fell on homecoming to Northeast.

The Comets lost 48-14 and fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in district play.

West Liberty’s offense started on the right foot Friday.

With quarterback Ryker Dengler under center, returning from last week’s injury, he marched the Comets down the field for the score on their opening drive as Alexis Michel found his way to the endzone for the score to take a 8-0 lead.

The Rebels answered quickly and effectively, putting up 22 straight points and shutting down the Comet offense for the remainder of the first half. The headed into the locker rooms trailing 22-8.

The Rebels’ attack could not be slowed in the second half, as they continued to rack up points on the Comets, adding an additional eight in the third quarter.

The Comets found the endzone for the second time in the fourth quarter but were unable to overcome the deficit as the visitors tallied another 18 points in the closer to take a 48-14 victory.

Searching for their first district victory, the Comets will head to Monticello on Friday to take on the Panthers.

Monticello is led by senior quarterback Preston Ries (1335 yards, 15 touchdowns, 6 interceptions passing and 106 carries for 829 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing).

On defense, Ries also leads the team with 52.5 tackles, 14 for a loss.

West Liberty will play their final game of the season at home on October 13 against Camanche.
