The West Liberty volleyball team grabbed five match wins this week in six attempts, with four wins at Western Dubuque’s Bobcat Invitational.

The Comets dominated Wilton at home for senior night, taking the sweep, and picked their way through the field at the Western Dubuque tournaments on Saturday before falling to sixth ranked Class 5A Pleasant Valley to end the week.

The Comets started the week with a conference matchup against Wilton.

West Liberty dominated the first set, taking the victory 25-4 to start senior night with a bang.

The Beavers battled back in the second set, controlling the pace for the majority until a late run put the Comets over the top in the second set.

The back and forth affair continued in the third set before the Comets closed the match 25-19 for the home sweep.

On Saturday, at Western Dubuque, the Comets made quick work of Tipton, Davenport North and Decorah, recording 2-0 sweeps in all three matches.

The Comets dropped one set in their series against the hosts in group play before chugging along to play Pleasant Valley in the final match of the day.

However, the Spartans swept the Comets in two sets to end their week.

The Comets sit at 23-8 headed into the final week of the regular season ranked 14th in class 3A.

The Comets will head to Durant on Thursday to play their final regular season conference match on October 5.

They will also go to Cedar Rapids for their annual stop at Jefferson High School for the Westside Invitational.
