Preserving community voices through oral history

We are excited to announce a unique opportunity for community members across the State of Iowa to share their stories as part of a collaborative effort with the University of Iowa.
Through an oral history project, they aim to delve into the rich tapestry of the lived experiences of the Hispanic and Latino Immigrants. They will also be exploring themes related to civic engagement.
The project involves conducting audio-only interviews with Hispanic and Latino immigrants. These interviews serve as a platform to capture the essence of community life, supplementing traditional analytical data with firsthand narratives.
The goal is to empower community members by providing a space for them to share their stories and perspectives. By embracing the power of storytelling, the mission is to educate and inspire others while fostering a deeper understanding of the Hispanic and Latino collective identity.
One of the highlights of this project is the opportunity for participants to preserve their interviews for future generations.
Interviews will be archived at the Iowa Women's Archives at the University of Iowa Libraries, ensuring that these invaluable stories are accessible to scholars and researchers for years to come.
Participants in the project will receive a $50 gift card as a token of appreciation, along with a copy of their interview.
Participants who wish to remain anonymous will have the option to do so. If you are interested in participating, you can call directly at 331-725-2761 or scan the provided QR code to fill out a form.
The team will then schedule an interview, either via Zoom or in-person. For in-person interviews, they prioritize meeting participants in their preferred location to facilitate intimate conversations and maintain audio quality.
Oral history interviews will be conducted throughout the summer. This is an exciting storytelling opportunity.

El proyecto implica realizar entrevistas de audio únicamente con inmigrantes hispanos y latinos. Estas entrevistas sirven como plataforma para capturar la esencia de la vida comunitaria, complementando los datos analíticos tradicionales con narrativas de primera mano.
El objetivo es empoderar a los miembros de la comunidad brindándoles un espacio para compartir sus historias y perspectivas. Al aprovechar el poder de la narración, la misión es educar e inspirar a otros y al mismo tiempo fomentar una comprensión más profunda de la identidad colectiva hispana y latina.
Uno de los aspectos más destacados de este proyecto es la oportunidad que tienen los participantes de preservar sus entrevistas para las generaciones futuras.
Las entrevistas se archivarán en los Archivos de Mujeres de Iowa de las Bibliotecas de la Universidad de Iowa, lo que garantizará que estas invaluables historias sean accesibles para académicos e investigadores en los años venideros.
Los participantes en el proyecto recibirán una tarjeta de regalo de 50 dólares como muestra de agradecimiento, junto con una copia de su entrevista.
Los participantes que deseen permanecer en el anonimato tendrán la opción de hacerlo.
