Free throws and fouls rules adjusted for 2023 season

One-and-one is gone; fouls will reset at end of each quarter.

Going to the local Wilton Beaver or Durant Wildcat basketball games this year will look a bit different.

Not only will fans be impressed with the gym, but they will have to possibly hold their tongue when they see the new rules this year.

Specifically, rules for free throw shooting were made for this season and going forward.

For fouls, there will be no more one-and-one free throws. There will always be a bonus of two free throws.

The bonus free throws will begin when one team has committed five fouls instead of the past where a one-and-one would occur after seven fouls and an automatic two free throws awarded once a team reaches ten fouls.

Team fouls will reset after each quarter and the scoreboards that you see at games will show a maximum of five team fouls each quarter. Who commits fouls and how many each individual player commits are unchanged and will be displayed like normal on scoreboards.

These rule changes were made by the National Federation of State High School Associations. A gentle reminder to please be patient with the officials on the floor and the scoreboard staff as they adjust to these changes.
