Atalissa has a growing feral cat problem and the city council and police departments are taking it very seriously, according to Mayor Angie Dickey, talking about the city’s Sept. 11 meeting at City Hall.

Police officer Mike Shannon plans to give a presentation to the council at their next meeting on Monday, Oct. 9, beginning at 6 p.m. at City Hall, to put a plan in place to try to eliminate or at least control the wild cat problem that seems to be growing.

“It is serious because they will multiply,” Dickey said. She said the city wants to curtail the problem before it gets totally out of hand and the police officer plans to present options to the council to eliminate the problem.

Windstream installs fiber optic cable

In other business, the city approved using a company called Windstream to bring fiber optic table to the community, possibly before the end of the year. The cable would be laid on city property between sidewalks and street to all households and businesses in the community, bringing faster Internet and cable services.

There would be no cost to the city for the upgrade, the mayor explained.

The city also approved an $850 bid to cut down a damaged tree near the water tower, offered by S & S Services of Atalissa.

The council also continues to make applications for grants to build a new multi-purpose basketball court in the community. Mayor Dickey said there continues to be progress on the project and just it will just take time and effort before the project becomes a reality. The city is hoping to build the facility south of the city’s maintenance shed on Cherry Street.

Trick or treat hours set next meeting

It was also noted Halloween hours would be set at the October meeting, which anyone is welcome to attend.
