Muscatine County Veteran Affairs proudly announces the instrumental role played by Iowa State Senator Mark Lofgren in the proposing and passage of Senate File 2430, an Act relating to the correction and substitution of death certificates.

This significant legislation brings much-needed relief to families and survivors of Veterans who have passed away from service-connected conditions, particularly those affected by toxic exposures such as Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.

Senator Lofgren collaborated closely with several Muscatine County family members and survivors of Vietnam Veterans who tragically succumbed to the effects of Agent Orange.

Their collective efforts resulted in the passing of Senate File 2430, which addresses critical challenges faced by families and survivors in claiming federal Pensions and Survivor Benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Prior to the enactment of this legislation, families and survivors encountered substantial obstacles in amending Iowa death certificates to accurately reflect the underlying causes of death stemming from toxic exposures.

Previously, they had only 90 days to initiate changes or amendments, after which the process became arduous and costly, requiring a fee of $195 and a court appearance before a judge.

With the passage of Senate File 2430, families and survivors now have a significantly extended window of one year to initiate changes or amendments to death certificates, provided they furnish appropriate medical documentation justifying the revision.

Importantly, this can now be accomplished without incurring any fees or appearing before a judge, streamlining the process and alleviating undue burdens on grieving families.

"I’m so glad we were able to get this legislation passed this session. Especially for the loved ones of our veterans who might now be able to access the benefits that they’re entitled to due to the sacrifice that their Veteran made for our country. It is my hope to continue working with the Department of Health and Human Services to find ways that we can improve on the accuracy and integrity of death certificates in Iowa," remarked Senator Lofgren.

Muscatine County Veteran Affairs extends its heartfelt appreciation to Senator Mark Lofgren for his steadfast dedication to the well-being of Veterans and their families.

Through his tireless advocacy and leadership, Senate File 2430 stands as a testament to Iowa's unwavering commitment to honoring the legacy of our nation's heroes.
