One dead after Wednesday morning car accident

One person is dead and two others injured after an early morning car accident in rural West Liberty.

At 12:42 a.m. on Sept. 18, West Liberty Fire and Ambulance were dispatched to a report of a possible motor vehicle collision in the 1200 block of Elder Avenue. Upon arrival, crews discovered a single vehicle accident. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled several times before coming to rest in a bean field with severe damage.

Two occupants were able to exit the vehicle prior to the arrival of fire and ambulance crews. They were transported by West Liberty Ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Main Campus - Trauma Center for treatment of their injuries.

A third person was partially ejected from the vehicle and was declared dead at the scene.

Elder Avenue remained closed for several hours, but has since reopened to traffic.

West Liberty Fire and Ambulance arrived at the scene seven minutes after dispatch.

They were assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, the West Liberty Police Department, the Muscatine County Sheriff's Office, Muscatine County Medical Examiner and Midtown Towing. Mutual aid was requested from Nichols Fire and AirCare, but was cancelled prior to their arrival.
