New flower shop opens in West Liberty

A new business with a familiar face has opened in downtown West Liberty.

Flower Yard, located at 116 East Third Street, opened Nov. 1. Destiny Brumbaugh owns it.

Brumbaugh worked at Jan’s Flower Yard for 20 years designing everything from floral bouquets to casket sprays, Brumbaugh said. She started working for McCrabb when she was 19 as an intern.

“I am so grateful for Jan (McCrabb),” she said. “She is a great lady that helped me get started here.”

Brumbaugh enjoys seeing the reaction from her customers when they come in to buy flowers.

“My favorite part is being able to be creative and seeing the smile on my customer’s faces,” she said. “Making the customer happy is the best feeling in the world.”

WeLead Executive Director Ken Brooks said he started working with Brumbaugh six months ago.

“She came and told me she wanted to keep a flower shoap in town,” Brooks said. “We helped her write a business plan and identified the location she ended up in.”

Brooks is happy to have a place for West Liberty residents and people from surrounding communities to come to for flowers.

“I think flowers play an important part in people’s lives,” Brooks said. “They are a sign of celebration and a token of remembrance and it’s so much more personable to be able to select what amounts to works of art from somebody in your community.”

Besides flowers, the Flower Yard will have centerpiece decorations, locally made greeting cards, homemade blankets and Willow Tree figurines.

Brumbaugh is also looking into having locally made chocolates and locally made wine available to purchase so when customers come in for flowers they can add either item to make it a gift basket, she said.

Brumbaugh will also do floral arrangements for special occasions such as weddings and quinceaneras, she added. She asks customers call her at 319-627-9273 to make an appointment to go over the event details and what options she has available.

Flower Yard will have a grand opening and ribbon cutting Saturday, Nov. 19, at 12 p.m.

The hours of Flower Yard are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
