Girls place fourth overall

The West Liberty Girls Wrestling team took to the mats for a pair of meets this week, starting off at Cascade, where they placed fourth overall crowning one champion and a trio of runners up, before heading to Wellman Saturday crowning another pair of champions.

Thursday, the Comets headed to Cascade for the Cougar Girls invitational. The Comets lone champion on the night would be Dionni Garcia-Vasquez, who pinned her way to the championship match before taking a 2 - 0 decision in the final.

Silvia Garcia-Vasquez scored a second place finish, capturing a pair of falls before losing by 5-1 decision in the championship match.

Ava Morrison grabbed a trio of pins in her preliminary matches, the quickest of which coming in just 36 seconds, before losing by fall in the Championship match.

The final Comet silver medalist was Amerie Alvarado, capturing a pair of pins in her first two rounds before capturing a decision in the semifinals and losing by fall in the championship match. Tatem Hale and Nellie Staff took home bronze medals for the Comets. Alyssa Sanchez, Kiley Collins, Katherin Barten, Alyssa Lenz and Vivian Cardona all putting in point scoring efforts for the Comets.

Saturday the Comets headed to Wellman for the Golden Hawk Girls invitational.

The weekend started where the week ended for Dionni Garcia-Vasquez, standing atop the podium, only this time she wouldn't stand alone as Silvia Garcia-Vasquez joined her as the second Coment gold earner. Alissa Sanchez and Kiley Collins grabbed bronze for the Comets. Nellie Stagg, Charlie Gingerich, Alyssa Lenz and Amerie Alvarado all turned in fourth place finish. Tatem Hale and Ava Morrison turned in points scoring performances for the Comets as they placed fifth overall.

The girls will take to the mats Saturday at Louisa-Muscatine for their next meet.
