The author Seth Godin once said, “Art is not in the eye of the beholder. It's in the soul of the artist.”

This seems to be true for photographer Atanacio "Tony" Frausto. This Mexican-American was born in Muscatine and raised in West Liberty.

Throughout his life, art has been an important part of his development. In his own words, “It has always been one of the consistent and positive aspects of my life."

Tony shares that as a child, he would color or sketch and as he grew older, he started to break dance competitively with his cousins and friends. Through performative art, he gained confidence. It pushed the artist to have his own style and be true to himself. Frausto recalls traveling to different cities around the midwest for competitions.

There, he would meet other dancers and artists like himself. It expanded his worldview. Tony recognizes that those diverse experiences shaped him into the person he is today. Once he graduated high school, he attended Kirkwood so he could continue taking art classes. At Kirkwood, he was introduced to the foundations of art, which tapped into other artistic realms.

Four years ago, Tony started working at West Liberty Foods. It was there when his passion for photography was born. Frausto had a co-worker that was a portrait photographer.

When he saw the work on social media, something inside him lit up. He became inspired to get his own camera and try out photography. At the beginning, he was mostly taking photos of cars at car shows and family members.

Then, he began taking photography more seriously and began learning how to use the camera. He then explored flash photography and it was at that point where he realized that photography was impactful. Through photography, he could tell stories. It was then that he discovered his calling. Photography became a way in which Tony could express himself and what he was feeling. He was able to document momentous times in his life and other people’s lives.

This Friday March 3, the Brick Street Gallery in 104 West Third Street in West Liberty, from 5 - 8 p.m. will be exhibiting Tony Frausto’s work.

At his exhibit he will showcase some of his best work as a photographer and artist. There will be a variety of portraits and photos he has taken in and around West Liberty. He hopes to showcase the culture and beauty of the town that saw him grow up. Frausto would like to show folks what he sees through the lens of his camera.

A lot of his work involves portraits such as senior photos, family photos, maternity photos and photographing events such as quinceañeras and weddings. For him, it is crucial and powerful to be able to hold still a moment in time and create images that emit emotions, depth, and energy. Through photography, the piece of art becomes a reflection of who you are.

Recently, Tony was featured in UNCOVER Magazine. This talented photographer has a way of capturing those special moments.
