La semana pasada, la comunidad latina de Iowa recibió una noticia devastadora. La policía de Waukee descubrió a dos personas muertas en un incidente que se nombro un asesinato-suicidio. Nelcybert Estefani Castillo Mata, una mujer de 26 años de La Guaria, Venezuela fue víctima de un feminicidio. Su asesino fue Felix Baccam, de 36 años, con quien Nelcybert había tenido una relación en el pasado.

Después de matar a Castillo Mata, el asesino se suicidó. Un feminicidio es un homicidio violento intencional con una motivación relacionada con el género. Los feminicidios son impulsados por roles de género estereotipados, discriminación hacia mujeres y niñas, relaciones de poder desiguales entre mujeres y hombres o normas sociales dañinas.

Baccam tenía antecedentes de violencia contra Castillo Mata. Los registros judiciales muestran que en 2019, 2021 y 2022 había sido acusado de agresión doméstica contra Castillo Mata. Last week, the Latino community in Iowa received devastating news. Waukee police discovered two people dead in an incident that became ruled a murder-suicide. Nelcybert Estefani Castillo Mata, a 26 year old woman from La Guaria, Venezuela, was the victim of a femicide. Her killer was 36 year old man Felix Baccam whom Nelcybert had been in a relationship with in the past. After killing Castillo Mata, he killed himself. A femicide is an intentional violent killing with a gender-related motivation. Femicides are driven by stereotyped gender roles, discrimination towards women and girls, unequal power relations between women and men, or harmful social norms.

Baccam had a prior history of violence against Castillo Mata. Court records show that in 2019, 2021 and 2022, he had been charged with domestic assault against Castillo Mata. Five months ago, Baccam was arrested after he allegedly punched and strangled Nelcybert. He was charged with domestic assault-impeding blood/air flow. He was later released on a $2,000 bond.

Nelcybert was an immigrant mother of two a three-year old boy and one-year old girl. Her friends knew her as "La Chama." She came to this country with many dreams and worked hard to get her insurance license. Her mother passed away a year ago and her father and only brother reside in the state of Florida.
