The West Liberty softball team find themselves at 3-2 after a challenging first week of play.

The Comets secured a pair of wins coming in conference play against West Branch on their home field before knocking off Class 3A No. 1 Williamsburg at their home tournament over the holiday weekend.

The Comets dropped a shootout against Durant before falling against Class 5A No. 4 Muscatine.

The Comets welcomed their new home diamond with a bang, taking a pair of mercy rule victories over the Bears in their season opening double header.

West Liberty mounded five runs in the second inning of game one before going on to capture a 10-0 victory in six innings.

A similar story followed in game two as the Comets scored 12 runs in three innings, quickly dispatching of the Bears and bringing the night to and early end.

With a rainout Tuesday, the Comets set their sights on Durant for the first of two meeting for the year.

After a relatively slow opening two frames that saw the Comets trailing 2-1, they responded with seven in the third to secure a solid lead.

What followed was an onslaught of runs as both teams got their bats cooking with Durant plating 14 over the next three innings to grab a 17-10 victory.

On Saturday, the Comets matched up against Williamsburg for an early season ranked matchup between Class 3A powers.

The Comets found success on offense in the first inning, plating three runs before a quick response was provided by Williamsburg who plated two of their own.

Four in the second inning saw the Comets jump to a 7-2 advantage early. A two-run response from Williamsburg in the fifth wasn’t enough as the Comets knocked off the top team in class 3A.

The Comets went on to fall to Muscatine to end the day in Williamsburg by a score of 10-2.

No individual stats have been posted from any of West Liberty’s opening week games.

After a doubleheader against Durant on Monday, the Comets will play a one-game set against Tipton on Thursday before getting six full days off to begin the month of June.
