Comets enter into rough patch

West Liberty falls out of Class 3A rankings after recent spell

The West Liberty Volleyball team put the lid on a difficult week as they went 3-3 in its six matches last week, falling to Wilton in RVC play and Western Dubuque and Wapsie Valley in tournament play.

Along the way, the Comets grabbed wins over Cedar Rapids Jefferson, West Branch and Decorah.

The Comets started their week Thursday on the road against Wilton.

The RVC foes were no strangers, having a persistent rivalry on the volleyball court as community members packed into the gym for this installment.

The Beavers came ready to defend their home court, taking the opening set 25-18.

A valiant effort followed for the Comets in the second set, but with two well timed timeouts to stop the Comet momentum, Wilton was able to cut down their foes and take the second set 25-21.

Much the same followed in the third set, as the Comets fought but found themselves unable to overcome their hosts, being swept in a 25-19 finale.

The Comets moved ahead to Saturday for a tournament hosted by Western Dubuque. The Comets split their five total matchups, playing 10 total sets. The Comets started with quickly dispatching West Branch and Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

This was followed by a back-and-forth contest against hosts Western Dubuque, as the Comets fell 21-19 and 21-15.

The Comets quickly rebounded with another win over Decorah before their day was ended by Wapsie Valley, 21-19 and 21-13.

As a result of the recent results, West Liberty dropped out of the Class 3A rankings in the Oct. 3 release. The Comets were previously ranked 13th.

This likely means the Comets will not control where they play regionals and could rack up the bus miles for multiple road games. The regional brackets are expected to be released this week.

In the meantime, the Comets keep chugging toward the end of their season this week with tournament play in Cedar Rapids for Jeffersons West Side invite before moving into conference tournament play the following Monday.
