Hace varios meses, dentro de una comunidad de maestros de español avanzado en Facebook, se introdujo el concepto de fomentar relaciones con amigos por correspondencia para nuestras clases. Respondí con entusiasmo a esta propuesta porque es una actividad que quería hacer desde hace mucho tiempo con mis alumnos. Actualmente soy amiga por correspondencia de Abolition Apostles y he visto los beneficios de establecer conexiones con personal a través de correspondencia escrita.
Me asignaron una maestra cuya clase AP reflejaba el número exacto de estudiantes de la mía. Los estudiantes de West Liberty High School iniciaron el intercambio enviando la primera carta. Acabamos de recibir nuestra comunicación inicial y ha sido un momento encantador para nuestros estudiantes. En la era actual, el acto de enviar o recibir cartas se ha vuelto raro ya que es mucho más sencillo comunicarse a través de mensajes de texto. Sin embargo, recibir una carta evoca una sensación de entusiasmo, ya que significa establecer una conexión genuina con alguien.
Esta iniciativa ha demostrado ser inmensamente enriquecedora para nuestros estudiantes, ofreciéndoles una plataforma para refinar y mejorar sus habilidades de escritura en español. Una de las tareas del examen avanzado implica redactar una respuesta por correo electrónico, y estas interacciones con amigos por correspondencia les brindan una valiosa aplicación en el mundo real de estas habilidades adquiridas.
Nuestros amigos por correspondencia son estudiantes de Lake Travis High School en Austin, Texas. Sin duda su escuela es muy diferente a la nuestra. Su alumnado asciende a 4.000. Mientras que en West Liberty solo ofrecemos una lengua extranjera: el español, esta escuela en Austin, Texas, ofrece cursos de latín, francés, lenguaje de señas americano, español y alemán. Lake Travis es una escuela 6A y sus instalaciones son impresionantes. ¡La cafetería se parece a la área de comidas de un centro comercial! Entre las actividades extracurriculares que distinguen a su escuela se encuentra el Club Modelo de Naciones Unidas. Los miembros de este club debaten temas globales. Además, compiten en conferencias locales y nacionales en todo Estados Unidos. Esta organización también organiza su propia conferencia Modelo de Naciones Unidas. Sus programas deportivos incluyen actividades como tenis, natación y buceo, medicina deportiva y levantamiento de pesas.
Esta conexión ha sido una experiencia única y divertida para nuestros estudiantes, permitiéndoles construir relaciones con otros estudiantes AP de diferentes partes del país. Han compartido entre sí sus metas universitarias, su progreso en español AP y han establecido conexiones. Algunos incluso se han conectado a través de plataformas como Snapchat, Instagram o se siguen en Tik Tok. Esta experiencia de inmersión les brinda una oportunidad invaluable no solo para practicar sino también para mejorar sustancialmente sus habilidades en el idioma español.
West Liberty students find pen pals from Austin, Texas
Several months ago, within a community of AP Spanish educators on Facebook, the concept of fostering pen pal relationships for our classes was introduced. I eagerly responded to this proposal because it is an activity I have wanted to do for a long time with my students. I am currently a penpal through Abolition Apostles and I have seen the benefits of establishing connections with people via written correspondence.
I was matched with a teacher whose AP class mirrored the exact number of students in my own. West Liberty High School students initiated the exchange by sending the first letter. We've just received our initial communication, and it's been a delightful moment for our students. In today's era, the act of sending or receiving letters has become rare as it's far simpler to communicate via text messages. However, receiving a letter evokes a sense of excitement as it signifies establishing a genuine connection with someone.
This venture has proven immensely enriching for our students, offering them a platform to refine and enhance their Spanish writing skills. One of the tasks in the AP exam involves composing an email response, and these pen pal interactions are providing them with invaluable real-world application of these acquired skills.
Our pen pals are students at Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas. Without a doubt, their school is very different from ours. Their student body numbers at 4,000. While at West Liberty we only offer one world language-Spanish, this school in Austin, Texas offers courses in Latin, French, American Sign Language, Spanish, and German. Lake Travis is a 6A school and their facilities are impressive. The cafeteria resembles a mall food court! Among the extracurricular offerings that distinguish their school is the Model United Nations Club. Members of this club debate global issues. In addition, they compete in local and national conferences around the United States. This organization also hosts their own Model United Nations conference. Their athletic programs include activities such as tennis, swimming and diving, sports medicine, and weightlifting.
This connection has been a unique and fun experience for our students, allowing them to build relationships with other AP students from different parts of the country. They have shared with each other their college goals, their progress in AP Spanish, and have established connections. Some have even connected through platforms like Snapchat, Instagram or follow each other on TikTok. Ultimately, this immersive experience is providing them with an invaluable opportunity to not just practice but substantially enhance their Spanish language skills.
