A trio of Comets competed at the Iowa High School State Tournament last week. Colin Cassady (113-pounds), Josh Zeman (152-pounds) and Drake Collins (170-pounds) competed for the last time in the Comet singlet.

Colin Cassady

Colin Cassady got the tournament started for the Comets with a 6 - 5 win in the second round to move to the quarterfinals where he met fellow River Valley Conference opponent Jonah Lunesman of Monticello.

Cassady jumped out to an early lead and controlled the match from the beginning taking a 12 -5 win to put him the semi-finals for consecutive years. Cassady couldn’t get things going in the semi’s against Aiden Smith of Atlantic and took a 11 - 2 loss to put him on the backside of the bracket.

Cassady fell the next two matches to take sixth place in his bracket. This is the second year Cassady placed at the State Tournament. He finished his senior season with a 19 - 8 record.

Josh Zeman

Josh Zeman came into the State Tournament looking to best his eighth place finish in last year's tournament. Zeman fell to his first opponent Brendon Heying of Benton Community 6 - 3 to fall to the backside of the bracket.

Zeman picked up a fall in 1:51 over his next opponent to stay alive and move to the next round to face Hunter Stevens of Sargent Bluff. In a back and forth match with Steffans, Zeman managed to score two points at the end of the match to secure a 10 - 9 win to move one win away from placing.

In the next round Zeman faced Aiden Flora of ADM in a battle of winner moves on to the placing round and loser goes home. In a back and forth match Zeman came up short losing 6 - 4 to end his tournament run. Zeman finished out his senior year with a record of 47-10.

Drake Collins

Drake Collins is the veteran of the group making this his third trip to the State Tournament. Last year Collins battled his way to a fifth place finish in the same weight class.

Collins had a tough draw out the gate with Hesston Johnson of Roland Story. Collins fell to Johnson in the fourth overtime of the match 3 - 2. The loss moved Collins to the backside of the bracket where he faced district opponent from the week before, Connor Parker of Williamsburg. This time Collins wasted no time with a pin of 2:37 to move on to the next round.

In the next round Collins faced Zayvion Ellington of Sargent Bluff, in a back and forth match.

Ellington scored a late takedown to pull out a 10-9 win and eliminate Collins from the tournament. Collins finished his senior campaign with a 45 - 6 record.
