Winter weather won’t quit

Wind chill attacks again

Posted

Two weeks ago, Eastern Iowa was buried under two feet of snow. While snowfall this last week hardly rivaled two weeks ago, cold weather continued to be a problem.

“Dangerous wind chills will also redevelop over much of the area Friday,” warned the National Weather Services of the Quad Cities. “The dangerous cold will intensify with wind chills of 20 below to 40 below zero."

Indeed, Friday and Saturday were met with wind chills that kept most community members home, once again. On Friday a quick moving snow system dropped around 1-4 inches of snow.

The snow was dry, fluffy, and easily blown around. With gusty winds averaging 35 mph, the resulting blowing and drifting led to hazardous travel conditions over the weekend.

Sleet and some freezing rain entered the mix early Monday morning, resulting in ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch across southeast Iowa.

Difficult travel continued to be a theme, many on their Monday morning commute traversed slick roads and sidewalks, especially on untreated surfaces.

For now, Iowan’s are still battling a deep freeze. Cities have worked diligently to remove snow from the roads, but right now it has nowhere to go.

A winter weather advisory remained in effect through Tuesday, Jan. 22. With it came mixed precipitation.

This resulted in additional snow accumulations of up to one to two inches and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch in some areas.

There is hope though, the temperature is expected to rise soon. The high for Thursday is 46 degrees, Friday 48 degrees, Saturday 53 degrees and Sunday 51 degrees.

Stay warm and stand strong fellow Iowans!
