There is no broken record in West Liberty — The Comet girls have won again.

In what is becoming a weekly occurrence, the Comets took command of the Highland Girls Wrestling Tournament last Friday by scoring 206 team points.

Second place, Mid-Prairie, scored 151 team points. The top five was completed by Iowa City Liberty (123), Fort Madison (104) and Muscatine (96).

Five Comets took home gold medals for their efforts — Alissa Sanchez (110), Silvia Garcia-Vasquez (115), Kiley Collins (120), Dionni Garcia-Vasquez (140), and Bricsia Garcia-Vasquez (235).

Sanchez went 3-0 with two first-period pins and one third-period pin, which came in the championship match against the home favorite Angelina Roling who entered the match with a 20-3 record.

Silvia Garcia-Vasquez also went 3-0 with two second-period pins and one pin in the first period. The latter pin came against rival Wilton Beaver Audra Coss.

Collins got the first of her three pins in just 25 seconds to boost her into the semifinals. In the final two rounds, she battled into the second period to finish the match. In the championship, she defeated Mara Smith of Fort Madison.

Dionni Garcia-Vasquez finished all three of her opponents in 90 seconds or less. She took part in a star-studded battle in the championship against a 20-1 Lila Miller from Pekin, but the Comet came out unscathed.

Lastly, Bricsia got a free pass to the semifinals and only needed two wins to claim her crown. She used a first-period pin in the semifinals and a 28-second pin in the championship match against Abigail Carr of Iowa City Liberty to clinch the title.

Two other Comets nearly got over the finish line as well. Alivia Garcia at 105 and Amerie Alvarado at 190 each placed second on Friday.

All three of Garcia’s matches ended with first-period pins. She got pins over Wilton and Muscatine foes before falling to Elyssa Graber of WACO in the championship.

Alvarado only wrestled twice at Midland. She got a first-period pin against Macy Bonebrake of WACO in the semifinals and came one point away in a 5-4 decision loss against Chloe Sexton of Highland from the title.

Lastly, in the 130-pound bracket, Mercedes Brockert finished on a high note and on the podium with her third-place finish. She bounced back from a major decision loss in the semifinals and ground out a 4-3 decision in the decider against Harper Johnson of Iowa City Liberty.

West Liberty will have a busy week, weather permitting, to continue their streak of great results. On Thursday, the Comets are slated to participate in the Cascade Invitational as well as the Mid-Prairie Girls Invitational on Saturday.
