The record is not broken, nor is it getting old — The Comets are champions yet again.
This time, it was at the Saber Girls Wrestling Invitational hosted by Central DeWitt.
With 179 team points, the Comets could not be caught. They defeated Highway 34 for second place (160 team points), as well as Davenport Central (149), Clinton (134.5) and Anamosa (115).
West Liberty had five individual champions and one runner-up en route to the title.
At 110, Alissa Sanchez won four matches to claim the title with four pins. The title match against Karlena Buford of Midland who entered the match with a 15-1 record. Sanchez ended the match in the second period.
The 125-pound “B” round robin was won by Ashley Gallardo. Her two wins were both by second-period pin.
Amerie Alvarado won the 190-pound bracket with a 59-second pin in the title bout against Cambrie McLoyd of Clinton.
After that, the Garcia-Vasquez sisters went to work.
Silvia won at 115 with three wins, including a first-period pin over Hannah Park of Davenport Central in the championship.
Dionni took control of the 140-pound bracket by winning four matches. She used three pins to propel herself into the title match and took the gold with an 11-2 major decision over Pleasant Valley’s Kyna Moffit.
At 125, Kiley Collins nearly joined her teammates in the winner’s circle but still had a great afternoon. After winning three matches to get to the first-place match, she fell in a tough 4-0 decision to Mackenzie Bachman of MFL MarMac.
These girls have had a stellar start to the season and will be off for over two weeks for winter break. Resuming the season in 2024, they will be back on the mats on January 5 for the Highland Girls Wrestling Tournament.
