West Liberty girls take five first at Durant meet

The West Liberty High School girls track and field team competed the week in Durant Tuesday in the Wildcat Relays capturing fifth place and Mid-Prairie Thursday while qualifiers competed in Des Moines at the famous Drake Relays.

On Tuesday, April 20, the Comets loaded up to head to Durant, getting some standout performances from athletes. The team was led by junior Macy Daufeldt, topping the charts in both the 100-meter dash and the long jump.

Sammi Goodale put in a gold medal performance for the Comets in the 400 meters, running a time of 1:09.11 to capture the Comets third first place finish.

Two Comets found the podium in the 100-meter hurdles as freshman Laney Esmoil won the event and Sydney Rivera finishing third. Lila Guerra placed third in the 3,000-meter run for West Liberty.

Rilee Han captured a fifth first place in the high jump for the Comets. The Comets scored 67 points and placed fifth overall.

On Thursday, April 22, Macy Daufeldt and Rilee Han took a trip to Des Moines to compete in the Drake Relays while everyone else headed to Wellman to compete at Mid-Prairie High School.

Laney Esmoil highlighted action for the Comets with her seventh place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. The Comets had a trio place in the 100-meter dash, led by Sydney Rivera, finishing 14th, while she was joined by teammates Alissa Sanchez and Laney Esmoil who placed 16th and 17th respectively.

Macy Daufeldt captured a fourth place finish in the long jump at drake, jumping a distance of 17 feet 2 ½ inches. She was the only Comet to place at the meet. It was noted that her finish tied the best placing ever by a West Liberty female athlete in the famous meet that attracts the best high school athletes in the state.
