Voluntary Action Council prepares for holiday distribution program

The West Liberty Voluntary Action Council is preparing for the annual community Christmas distribution to be held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19.

VAC officials say applications are available at the West Liberty Community Schools, West Liberty City Hall, food pantry at First Church United, New York Dollar Store, Casey’s General Store in Nichols and the U.S. Post Office in Atalissa. Completed applications must be mailed or delivered to First Church United, 1100 North Calhoun, in West Liberty by Monday, Nov. 30.

Because of te COVID-19 pandemic, procedures will be different this year, organizers pointed out. All food to be distributed will come from the local food pantry, not local food drives that have contributed in the past. Members of the Rotary Club of West Liberty will provide toilet paper.

The Aquarius Club will again host the toy Star Trees at MidwestOne Bank and the West Liberty State Bank. :pca; residents can choose a star with a child’s gender and age and donate toys for children age 12 and under. All toy donations must be received by Saturday, Dec. 13. The donations will be sorted and bagged by Aquarius members at First Church United on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

Toys, food, and hygiene items will be distributed via a drive up or delivery appointment on Friday, Dec. 18 from 4:30-7 p.m. or Saturday, Dec. 19 from 9-11 a.m.

Organizers say no one will be entering First Church United’s community center to collect holiday donations Fruit sacks will be distributed to specified senior citizens on Saturday morning. Volunteers will be needed for the drive up distribution and delivery.

Churches are collecting socks, hats, gloves, underwear and other items which will be distributed by the schools’ nurses. Coats purchased through the annual Rotary Club program will be given away at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at a yet to be determined date.
