The West Liberty High School Volleyball team, ranked eighth in the state, started their Class 2A Iowa State Volleyball Tournament run Monday night in the West Liberty High School gym matching up in the first round against the Anamosa Blue Raiders.

West Liberty, which dominated the Blue Raiders in regular season play earlier this year, emerged victorious again in three straight sets.

The Comets dominated the opening set 25-11. Anamosa gave the Comets a battle in the second set but the Comets would emerge victorious 25-19 before putting the series to rest with a 25-14 victory in the third and final set.

Key take away from Coach Ruben Galvan was that the Comet offense was clicking, showed consistency from the service line and that the team was “out there having fun.” He went on to praise the team’s intensity. “We were able to keep it up for three games and that’s what we’ll need to do from now on,” he said.

Brooklyn Buysse recorded 29 assists in their first round match up, while adding six digs and a kill. Macy Daufeldt added 17 kills to go along with 11 digs and an ace. Martha Pace notched 10 kills and 10 digs for the winners while Monica Morales added 14 digs and five assists. Averi Goodale etched three aces for the Comets, paired with six kills.

What’s up next?

The Comets battle against Central Lee in a Regional Semi-Final match to be held Wednesday night, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at West Liberty High School. If victorious, the Comets will face the winner of Davenport Assumption and Maquoketa on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

West Liberty Activities Director Adam Lorio said a site for that 7 p.m. game has not been locked down, although pointing out it will be a neutral site. Assumption, with a 19-2 record, is the number four ranked team in Class 3A while West Liberty, at 24-6, is ranked eighth. Assumption eliminated the Comets earlier this year in the state softball tournament, so the Comets will be looking for revenge if the two teams should meet.

Lorio also said West Liberty will be hosting a Class 2A Regional final on Wednesday, Oct. 28, noting among area favorites vying for the title will be Wilton and West Branch.
