The West Liberty High School Boys track team competed at the River Valley Conference track meet Thursday in Anamosa, scoring 17 points overall as the Comets placed 11th in team scoring while Bellevue captured the conference title with 108 points consisting on nine top three finishers.

Senior Sam Gingerich headlined the Comets night, capturing gold in the 110-meter high hurdles for the Comets, He also ran on the shuttle hurdle team with teammates Caleb Wulf, Jayce Mchugh, and Drake Collins, finishing in fifth place.

The Comets’ 4 x 100 meter relay squad of Gingerich, Collins, Wulf and McHugh captured seventh place honors. To finish out the night, the Comets Distance Medley squad of Gingerich, Collins, Mchugh and Burroughs placed eighth to bring in the Comets final points scoring effort of the evening.

The Comets will head to the state qualifying meet Thursday in Tipton to fight for their opportunity to compete at the state track meet the following week.

Comet girls battle RVC foes

On Thursday, the West Liberty High School girls track team continued their pursuit for the state tournament at step one of their postseason appearances, running in Anamosa.

The Comets scored 25 points as a team, while Mid-Prairie ran away with the conference title, scoring 136 points that included six first place finishes.

The Comets were led by junior Macy Daufeldt, capturing first in long jump. Rilee Han captured placed third in the high jump to round out top five placements for the Comets in the field portion of the event.

Freshman Laney Esmoil highlighted the track portion of the meet for the Comets, taking a surprising third in the 200-meter dash. To finish the night, the West Liberty shuttle hurdle relay team of Sydney Rivera, Laney Esmoil, Sammi Goodale and Macy Daufeldt grabbed sixth place ribbons to give the Comets their final point tally.

The Comets will head to the state qualifying meet Thursday in Tipton to fight for their opportunity to compete at the state track meet the following week.
