De mediados de septiembre a mediados de octubre es el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, que en los Estados Unidos reconoce las contribuciones y la influencia de los hispanoamericanos en la historia, la cultura y los logros de los Estados Unidos.
Se eligió el 15 de septiembre como punto de partida por ser el aniversario del Grito de Dolores, donde el padre Miguel Hidalgo tocó la campana de su iglesia y dio el llamado a las armas que desencadenó la Guerra de Independencia de México. Sin embargo, no es solo México, ya que la mayoría de los países centroamericanos y Chile conmemoran su independencia de España el 15, 16 y 18 de septiembre, respectivamente.
Como resultado, hay muchas festividades en West Liberty y sus alrededores en septiembre. La Iglesia de San José tiene su Festival Familiar anual el domingo 4 de septiembre de 1:30 p. m. a 6 p. m. Habrá mucha comida, las famosas pupusas de María Durán que atraen a gente de lugares tan lejanos como Iowa City. También tendremos a un amigo mío de Davenport que hará auténticos tacos mexicanos. Gorditas, mazorcas de maíz, horchata, duros y mucho más estarán disponibles. Un cambio del pasado, será en la iglesia este año, 107 W.6th Street como dijeron los trabajadores que organizan el evento de esa manera si se quedan sin pupusas, pueden hacerlas más rápido.
Programado para presentarse en el Festival de la Familia de St. Joseph el domingo 4 de septiembre, también tendrá el Quad Ballet Folkroico de 2 a 2:30 p. m., la presentación de la beca LULAC a las 3 p.m. Música Folclórica de Colombia de 5-5:30 p.m. Es posible que también tengamos una banda de mariachis e incluso algo de comedia stand-up, pero estamos trabajando para programarlos. ¡Será muy divertido y esperamos verte allí!
La semana siguiente es el Festival de los Niños y la Fiesta Latina el 10 de septiembre. Hablando con Francisco Martínez, el coordinador del evento, dijo que todavía estaba trabajando en un cronograma pero que lo enviaría directamente a West Liberty Index para su publicación. ¡Debe ser un gran mes seguro!
Mid-September thru Mid-October is Hispanic Heritage Month which in the United States recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
September 15 was chosen as the starting point because it is the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, where Father Miguel Hidalgo rang his church bell and gave the call to arms that triggered the Mexican War of Independence. It is not just Mexico however, as most Central American countries and Chile commemorate their independence from Spain Sept. 15, 16, and 18, respectively.
As a result, there are a lot of festivities in West Liberty and the surrounding area in September. St. Joseph’s Church has its annual Family Festival on Sunday, Sept. 4, from 1:30 - 6 p.m.
There will be lots of food, Maria Duran’s famous pupusas which bring people from as far as Iowa City. There will also be a friend of mine from Davenport make authentic Mexican tacos. Gorditas, corn on the cob, horchata, duros and much more will be available.
A change from the past, as it will be held at the church this year at 107 West Sixth Street as the workers running the event said that way if they run out of pupusas, they can make quicker.
Scheduled to appear at the St. Joseph’s Family Festival will also be the Quad City Ballet Folkroico from 2 - 2:30 p.m., LULAC Scholarship Presentation at 3 p.m., the Danza Guadalupana from 4 - 4:30 p.m., and Spanish Folk Music from Colombia from 5- 5:30 p.m. There may also be a mariachi band and even some standup comedy but stil are working to schedule those acts. The week after is the Children’s Festival and the Fiesta Latina on Sept. 10. Speaking with Francisco Martinez, the coordinator for the event, he said, he was still working on a schedule but would send it directly to the West Liberty Index for publication. It should be a great month for sure!
