Summer social event cancelled in West Liberty

COVID-19 concerns halt planning

In a surprising change of plans, the West Liberty Summer Social ’21, being put together by West Liberty High School alumni for Friday, July 16, has been cancelled.

Organizer Jerry Kiwala said he agonized over the decision, but said, “because of the uncertainty of the spread of Covid 19 over the next three to nine months I didn't want to put anybody at risk.”

An event that was to benefit West Liberty Chamber of Commerce members to be held at the Grove area of the Muscatine County Fairgrounds, organizers have decided against hosting the event. The one-day event planned to feature old time music favorites played by Kiwala, who is a disc jockey, a picnic style dinner, classic car display, classic agriculture implements and lots of socializing as graduates of WLHS and class reunions were welcome to attend the event to be held just before the opening of the Muscatine County Fair and on the weekend of the Chamber’s Fair Parade through the streets of West Liberty and Picnic in the Park at Kimberly Park on Sunday, July 19.

Phyllis Owen Sterba was a co-chairman of the committee organizing the event, hoping to capture some of the spirit behind the All-Class Reunion, last held in the summer of 2019.

Kiwala did say he hopes his committee will be able to put the event together for 2022, noting there should not be any concern with the COVID-19 pandemic by that time.
