School sites picked for vaccine distribution

West Liberty High School and Middle School have been approved as official Muscatine County COVID-19 vaccination sites, the West Liberty School Board of Education approving a "Memorandum of Understanding" between the district and the Muscatine County Public Health Department Monday evening, Dec. 21.

Superintendent Dr. Diego Giraldo made the announcement after putting together the agreement to utilize the facilities on Saturdays once the vaccine becomes available through the health department. Thus far, the FDA has approved emergency use of vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna that have been proven to be 95 percent effective.

There would be "sufficient advance notice" as the vaccination process moves forward for local residents in an orderly fashion, with certain age groups and front line health workers getting priority.

The district has it's attorney team also look over the agreement. board president Emily Geertz noting the district should do everything to protect itself while being able to provide a public facility for vaccinations. The arrangement was made because of the relationship the district has built with the health department through the pandemic.
