Police Chief resigns

The hunt for a new police chief is on, though the department and city expect a smooth transition.

Police chief Eric Werling has accepted a position in Anamosa, and will leave West Liberty on Friday, Nov. 17.  Mayor Ethan Anderson appointed Sgt. Don Strong as interim police chief to fill the absence.

“I think that Don is the best choice for this position,” said Chief Werling, “He’s had roles this high at other departments. He’s got the right experience, he’s got the right training, he’s got the right temperament and he’s got the right drive for this.”

The city council discussed the hiring process, eventually voting 4-0 in favor of using internal resources to find a candidate rather than using a consultant. The hope is that by doing it internally the city can find the right chief quickly.

Chief Werling cited family reasons for leaving the position. He was originally hired in August, 2021, replacing interim Chief Dave Lira following the resignation of Jeremy Burdess earlier that year.

“We’re really sorry to see you go,” said council member Cara McFerren. “We don’t want you to leave, but you have to do what’s best for yourself and your family.”

City staff will put together a timeline for hiring a new police chief and present it to the council at its next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
