Paris Salais, una estudiante de último año de West Liberty High School, recientemente se embarcó en un viaje transformador al corazón de la democracia estadounidense - Washington D.C. Esta joven líder viajó sola, y con esta experiencia, nos anima a todos a aprovechar el momento y lanzarnos a nuevas aventuras.
El capítulo de LULAC de West Liberty eligió patrocinar a Paris para que participara en el Seminario de Liderazgo Juvenil de LNESC en Washington, un programa de cinco días que reunió a más de 50 estudiantes de diversas partes de Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico. El programa fue diseñado para dotar a los jóvenes líderes de las habilidades y conocimientos necesarios para convertirse en fuerzas de cambio positivo en sus comunidades.
Durante su estancia en la capital de nuestro país, Paris y los otros jóvenes participaron en una serie de talleres, cada uno de ellos orientado a dotarlas de aptitudes de liderazgo. Tuvieron el increíble privilegio de escuchar a representantes estadounidenses y de instituciones públicas y privadas. Estas interacciones les proporcionaron una visión inestimable del funcionamiento interno de la capital de la nación y les infundieron un sentido de responsabilidad cívica.
Al ser la primera vez que viajaba, se sentía nerviosa por tener que navegar por el aeropuerto y la ciudad sola. Además, nunca se había subido al metro. Según Paris, fue mucho más fácil de lo que pensaba, sobre todo gracias a los acompañantes que cuidaron muy bien de todos. Esta estudiante de último curso ganó mucha más confianza en sí misma y, una vez allí, conoció a gente increíble . La joven quedó encantada de haberlos conocido. Paris pudo crear recuerdos con ellos que durarán toda la vida.
Esta académica les da un sencillo pero contundente consejo a todos aquellos que desean aventarse a una experiencia nueva: “No tengan miedo de hacer algo por sí mismos, y no se limiten a estas experiencias”. Su viaje a la capital de la nación ejemplifica las recompensas que esperan a quienes se atreven a explorar y afrontar lo desconocido.
Uno de los momentos más memorables de su viaje fue la visita a los monumentos emblemáticos. En compañía de sus compañeros, Paris tuvo el privilegio de presenciar la grandeza del Monumento a Abraham Lincoln, la imponente presencia del Monumento a George Washington y la solemnidad del Monumento a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Si el tiempo se lo hubiera permitido, a Paris le habría gustado visitar la Casa Blanca. Espera volver y explorar más Washington D.C.
Paris Salais nos recuerda las increíbles conexiones que pueden formarse cuando uno sale de su zona de confort y abarca lo desconocido. Como reflexión final, Paris envía un mensaje a cualquiera que dude de sí mismo: “Todo el mundo es capaz de grandes cosas; sólo hay que tener confianza en uno mismo para conseguirlas”. Paris Salais, a senior from West Liberty High School, recently embarked on a transformative journey to the heart of American democracy – Washington D.C. This young leader traveled by herself, and with this experience, she encourages us all to seize the moment and embrace new adventures.
The West Liberty LULAC chapter selected to sponsor Paris to participate in the LNESC Washington Youth Leadership Seminar, a five-day program that brought together over 50 students from various parts of the United States and Puerto Rico. The program was designed to equip young leaders with the skills and knowledge to become forces of positive change in their communities.
During her time in our nation’s capital, Paris and her fellow participants engaged in an array of workshops, each geared towards equipping them with leadership skills. They had the incredible privilege of hearing from American representatives, as well as public and private institution representatives. Such interactions provided an invaluable insight into the inner workings of the nation’s capital and ignited a sense of civic responsibility.
As a first-time traveler, she grappled with nervousness about navigating the airport and getting around the city. Additionally, she had never gotten on the metro. According to Paris, it was a lot easier than she thought, especially thanks to the chaperones that took good care of everyone. This senior gained much more confidence in herself and once there, she met amazing people that she’s so glad she met. Paris was able to create memories with them that will last a lifetime.
This scholar’s advice to those who are eager to try new adventures is simple but powerful: “Do not be scared to do something by yourself, and do not hold yourself back from these experiences.” Her journey to the nation’s capital exemplifies the rewards that await those who dare to explore and embrace the unknown.
One of the most memorable moments of her trip was the visit to the iconic monuments. In the company of her fellow participants, Paris had the privilege of witnessing the grandeur of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, the imposing presence of the George Washington Memorial, and the solemnity of the World War II Memorial. If time had permitted, Paris would have liked to tour the White House. She hopes to return and explore Washington D.C. more.
Paris Salais reminds us of the incredible connections that can be formed when one steps outside their comfort zone and embraces the unknown. As some final thoughts, Paris sends a message to anyone that is doubting themselves: “Everyone is capable of great things; you just need to have confidence in yourself to achieve them.” She sends her gratitude to the local LULAC chapter for this incredible opportunity and hopes everyone can visit our nation’s capital one day as well.
