Obit: Susan 'Sue' Messner

Susan “Sue” (Lillig) Messner, 77, of Sterling, Colorado, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2021 in Sterling.

Cremation has taken place and services will be at a later date.

Sue was born on April 18, 1943 in Washington, Iowa to LeRoy and Margaret (McNurlen) Lillig. She attended Keota High School and graduated in 1961.

She worked for Assemblers in West Liberty from 1975-‘81, Twin Gables in West Liberty, from 1975-‘81, Messner Machine from 1981-‘86, Production Products in Broomfield, CO from 1986-‘95, and Just Us Machine in Sterling from 1995-2015.

Sue was married to Richard McCrabb from June 18, 1961 until 1975. She later married William Messner on July 5, 1985. They were married for 35 years until his death in 2020.

Sue was a Cub Scout Leader from 1994-‘97, a National Rifle Assocation Black Powder Instructor from 1994-‘97, and a member of Boulder Four-Wheelers from 1982-‘92. She loved hosting parties, cooking, baking, gardening, reading and writing.

Sue is survived by her mother, Margaret Lillig of Manchester, Iowa; sons Steve McCrabb and Dan McCrabb, both of Manchester; daughter Shelly McCrabb of Sterling; sons Daniel Messner of Honolulu, HI and Joshua Messner of Ft. Collins, CO; as well as step-daughters Susan Honts of Muscatine, Cindy Brown of Atalissa, and Sandra Veen of Houghton Lake, MI. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Messner; brother Mike Lillig and her father, LeRoy Lillig.
