Candidates are being sought for the 2022 Muscatine County Fair Queen, it was announced this week by fair officials and chairman Merideth Schanz.

The event will be held on the opening night of the fair, Wednesday, July 20, in The Grove area of the Muscatine County Fairgrounds in West Liberty beginning at 5 p.m.

Haylee Lehman of West Liberty was the 2021 fair queen. Along with a queen, judges will select the fair’s first runner-up as well as giving a Miss Congeniality award.

Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, June 1 and entrants must be 16 years of age and not more than 21 and should reside in Muscatine County or be an active member of the community, 4-H, FFA, school or church organization in Muscatine County. Superintendents for the contest, besides Schanz, include Katie Chalupa, Morgan Forbes, Kris Nichols and Alli Youngbauer.

The fair queen is responsible in handling out fair trophies at livestock and other competitions for 4-H and FFA as well as open classes. Candidates should be sponsored by a local organization, church, business or individual.

“This is a great experience for any girl wanting to apply,” officials point out. The winner of the contest will compete for the Iowa State Fair Queen title in August at the Iowa State Fair. Officials say the contest serves as a learning tool for young ladies who gain valuable interview skills during the unique experience.

Anyone wishing to obtain an application should contact the fair office in West Liberty or go to the fair's website.
