Mortgage, rent relief available for those affected by derecho

Posted

The Iowa Association of REALTORS® (IAR) partnered with the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) to provide storm relief for areas of Iowa impacted by the derecho storm on Aug. 10. NAR’s REALTOR Relief Foundation has awarded IAR a grant of $250,000. IAR expects this total to grow with promises of more donations from other REALTOR associations across the country.

This grant can help individuals impacted by the derecho storm with mortgage payment assistance or rental costs due to displacement up to $1,000 per applicant.

“We have seen and heard of so much damage in Iowa. As an association, we are proud to be able to help our fellow Iowans with their housing costs. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the National Association of REALTORS® and other state REALTOR® associations. We are Iowa Strong and we will recover from this storm,” stated Scott Wendl, President of Iowa Association of REALTORS®.

“It is hard to put into words the damage I have seen in the Cedar Rapids area, but it has been amazing to see Realtors® and members of our community come together and help each other during this time of need. We know many homeowners and renters are struggling right now and we hope this additional relief will help them in their recovery, “ stated Kevin Platz, Chief Executive Officer from the Cedar Rapids Area of REALTORS®.

Some scenarios that would be eligible:

* A homeowner with a mortgage that was displaced due to damage of their home.

* A homeowner with a mortgage living in their home without power due to the storm damage.

* A renter that was displaced due to damage of their apartment building.
