La Fiesta Latina, una celebración anual, tendrá lugar este fin de semana en el centro de West Liberty el sábado, 11 de septiembre. Los líderes de este evento comenzarán la tarde de entretenimiento a las 3:00 PM ese día.
Gracias a una sola persona, los residentes locales están por disfrutar el 12ª Fiesta Latina anual. Nuestra comunidad tiene la gran fortuna de que, de las 3.800 personas con que contamos, tenemos bastante diversidad, pues, 52% de la gente es hispana.
Francisco Martínez vino a West Liberty en 1996 para que su familia pudiera estar cerca de Iowa City y sus grandes hospitales, ya que su hijo tiene deshabilitad. Antes de esto, Francisco había venido a los Estados Unidos en los años 1980 para trabajar en los campos agricultores de Texas y la Florida, luego integrándose a nuestra comunidad. Desde que vino aquí, Francisco se ha hecho ciudadano estadounidense, aunque, por supuesto, no se le ha ido su orgullo por sus raíces mexicans.
Francisco goza de ser parte de la comunidad y está celebrando 25 años de trabajar en West Liberty Foods. No obstante, el trabajo no es suficiente para él, así que todos los años se esfuerza para generar una experiencia divertida, festiva y entretenida para la comunidad entera, no sólo la comunidad latina. A Francisco le da orgullo traer un entretenimiento de calidad “sin que pague” ningún residente.
Francisco creó esta celebración anual en 2006 para la Iglesia Católica St. José. Después, se convirtió en un evento anual tanto para la comunidad como la iglesia. Así fue por seis años hasta el 2012.
Tras unos años de descanso, el pueblo vino a Francisco para pedirle que volviera a organizar el evento, ya que él tiene un don para hacerlo de una forma divertida y festiva.
En 2016, volvió a organizar la Fiesta. En 2017, fundó la organización sin fines de lucros Latinos Unidos de West Liberty y ahora la Fiesta se hace bajo las auspicias de ésta. Así ha sido por los últimos cuatro años.
Este año, el pueblo será entretenido por varios músicos y bailarines internacionales, incluyendo:
–3-4:30 PM: Estrello de Oro MX, desde Chicago.
–4:30-5 PM: Noryli Villada Ávila, DJ Nómada.
–5-6 PM: Danza de los Viejitos de Iowa y Corazón Latina Ballet Folclórico de México.
–6-7:30 PM: Los Dragones de la Cumbia, desde Chicago.
–8-9:30 PM: La Única Sonora Santanera Internacional, desde México.
Además, habrá una variedad de vendedores de comida, vendiendo varios platos hispanos, ¡para satisfacer a todos los apetitos!
Martínez dijo que es “muy probable” que se produzca el segundo desfile para la Fiesta Latina, comenzando en la Calle Spencer a las 4:30 PM, cerca de Jeff´s Market.
Francisco espera que los ciudadanos del pueblo salgan con ropa tradicional de sus respectivos países latinos, para que los demás aprendan de estas tierras. Estarán bienvenidos a participar en el desfile corto, lo cual comenzará en la Calle Spencer, ir hacia el norte hasta la Calle 5, hacia el oeste hasta la Calle Calhoun, y terminar en la Festival en la Calle 3. La delegación local de LULAC (Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos) también participará en el desfile.
Francisco dijo que es posible que no haya tren este año, pero los niños no tienen por qué preocuparse: habrá un toro mecánico y una casa para brincar en la Fiesta.
También habrá una rifa de beneficio para una nueva iPad 32gb Nueva Generación. El ganador de este premio será escogido durante la Fiesta Latina, pero éste no tiene que estar presente. Los boletos se pueden comprar en el New York Dollar Store, 320 N. Calhoun Street. Tom Brooke y Bill Koellner, dos patrocinadores locales, están donando el iPad.
La Fiesta concluye un día de actividades en West Liberty que abre con el 24ª Festival de Niños anual, lo cual tendrá lugar desde las 10:00 AM hasta las 3:00 PM en la Calle Tres del centro. Habrán shows de títeres hechos por el Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre de West Liberty, más de una docena de estaciones para crear burbujas, y muchas otras clases de actividades, inclusive el hacer máscaras.
Francisco recomienda que los residentes locales marquen sus calendarios, ¡para que salgan a gozar del gran entretenimiento y comida con sus vecinos de West Liberty!

The annual Fiesta Latina (a Latin Party) will take place next weekend in downtown West Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 11, with officials unveiling the line-up of entertainment beginning at 3 p.m. that afternoon.
Thanks to one individual, local residents are about to enjoy West Liberty’s 12th Fiesta Latina. Our community is fortunate that we may only have 3,800 people living here, but we are blessed with a diversity of almost 52 percent Latino population.
Francisco Martinez joined the West Liberty community in 1996 so he and his family could be close to health care opportunities in Iowa City for his disabled son. Francisco first came to the United States in the mid 1980’s working in the agriculture fields of Texas and Florida before moving to Illinois and ultimately to West Liberty. Francisco is a proud Mexican-American and, since living in West Liberty, has become a United States citizen.
Francisco enjoys being a part of the West Liberty community and is celebrating 25 years at West Liberty Foods, LLC. But just living here has not been enough for Francisco as he works every year to bring a fun, festive and entertaining experience to the entire community, not just the Latino community. Francisco takes great pride in bringing quality entertainment to West Liberty at “no charge” for all residents.
He created this annual celebration for St. Joseph's Catholic Church in 2006. This then became an annual event for both the church and the community. This continued for six years until 2012.
After a few years of taking a break, people in the community came to Francisco asking that he once again organize the celebration in the festive, fun way he is skilled to organize.
In 2016, he again organized the Fiesta after taking a four-year break. In 2017, he founded the non-profit organization, Latinos Unidos of West Liberty and the Fiesta Latina has continued solely under this organization. Francisco has organized the Fiesta Latina under the name of Latinos Unidos since 2017.
This year, the community will be entertained by several international musicians and dancers including:
• 3-4:30 p.m. – Estrella De Oro MX, from Chicago
• 4:30-5 p.m. – Noryli Villada Avila, D.J. Nomada
• 5-6 p.m. – Danza de los Viejitos de Iowa and Corazon Latino Ballet Folklorico de Mexico
• 6-7:30 p.m. – Los Dragones de la Cumbia from Chicago
• 8-9:30 p.m. – La Unica, Internacional, SONORA SANTANERA, from Mexico
There will also be a variety of food vendors serving numerous Mexican/Latino dishes to satisfy every appetite!
Martinez said it’s “very likely” the second Fiesta Latina parade will take place this year as well, starting at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Spencer Street near Jeff’s Market.
He’s hoping local citizens turn out in native Latino country costumes or attire to help educate attendees about their native lands. They are also welcome to march in the short parade, which will begin on Spencer Street, run north to Fifth Street, west to Calhoun Street and finish back at the festival on Third Street. The local chapter of LULAC the League of United Latin American Citizens, is expected to participate as well in the parade.
Martinez said there may not be a train this year for the party, but said local youths will be entertained with a mechanical bull as well as another bounce house at the event.
There is also a benefit drawing to win a new Generation 8 32gb Apple iPad. The winner of the prize will be drawn during the Fiesta Latina and the winner need not be present. Tickets can still be purchased at the New York Dollar Store, 320 N. Calhoun St., West Liberty. The iPad is being donated by Tom Brooke and Bill Koellner, a pair of local community supporters.

The Fiesta concludes a day of activities in West Liberty that opens with the 24th annual Children’s Festival which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Third Street downtown area, with puppet shows coodinated through Eulespiegel Puppet Theatre in West Liberty, more than a dozen bubble making stations and all kinds of other activities including mask making.
