Live sports, events now offered on line by district

Since most Comet fans can’t attend live games, they can at least get an opportunity to see the event live or on their own time now thanks to a technology update at West Liberty High School, the district board of education learned Monday, Dec. 7, at their regular meeting held at the District Administrative Office via Zoom.

Residents interested in finding out more about the live streaming on You-Tube of wrestling, girls and boys basketball and other events are asked to go to the West Liberty Community School District website for more information, according to activities director Adam Loria, reporting at the meeting.

He reported a state proclamation asking the districts to comply with a new ruling to allow only two fans per player per game will be instituted for the district, each player getting two passes. He said coaches, band members and even cheerleaders, who may also be at the events, will not get these “fan passes.” He also said there would be no concession stand, noting the limited attendance doesn’t make it feasible. Anyone in attendance must wear a mask, including athletes not in action, who have an option to wear a mask or not.

Loria said there might be changes from the state down the road regarding the rulings, but the district needs to abide by the procedures at this point in order to allow winter sports to be played.

In other business, the board approved two fundraising requests including from the high school girls basketball team and coach Matthew Hoeppner, who hoped to raise $300 by selling t-shirts and hosting a 50/50 raffle at their Dec. 18 game.

The proceeds would be used for activities and equipment that may include jerseys, travel gear, shootouts, team meals, snacks, clothing and a ball cage. It was noted half of the proceeds would be donated to a charity.

The board also approved a fundraiser by the Middle School TAG (Talented and Gifted) group directed by Jackie Henderson to produce special 3D ornaments that will be auctioned virtually. Funds raised will be donated to the West Liberty Area Ministerial Association’s “Student Help Fund,” intended to meet needs of students within the school district. The group hopes to raise $1,000.

The district also approved two resignations including Elementary School paraprofessional Julia Savona as well as Mindy Collins as Early Learning Center kitchen staff.

The district also took the first steps in setting policies for educational specifications for an expansion to the West Liberty Elementary School, where Early Learning Center students will eventually be moved from their facility, following a move of fifth grade classes from the elementary school to the middle school following a 10-classroom expansion of that facility which is already underway and is hoped to open by the 2021-22 school year.

The district will meet again on Monday, Dec. 21, beginning at 6 p.m. from the administration office boardroom via Zoom. The board will hear update on “Students on track” from high school principal Brenda Arthur-Miller as well as a report on English Language Learning.
