The West Liberty Lions Club met at the West Liberty Golf & Country Club on Monday April 12 to witness a performance of the West Liberty FFA Chapter “Ag Issues and Perceptions” team.
Practicing for their state FFA competition, the group talked about the issue of communication on the farm and the utilization of the Internet services in agriculture. Zach Morris, the FFA advisor spoke about the upcoming competition and about how proud he is of this teams’ performance. Lions praised the performance as “excellent,” wishing the team the best as they move into national competition.
The 11 Lions at the meeting heard a recap of the West Liberty High School National Honor Society event last month, co-sponsored by the Lions with the Rotary Club of West Liberty. President Duane Forbes addressed the dozens of students honored along with the 85 parents and guests in attendance at the Tuesday evening event.
The Lions provided a dessert of cupcakes and a drink for the honorees. NHS sponsor Deb Weis thanked the group for their support of the program.
A number of possible upcoming summer work projects were discussed by the civic organization as well at the meeting along with Atalissa Days, a two-day event set for Friday and Saturday, June 25-26, hosted as a fundraiser for the Atalissa Fire Department. The Lions will host the youngster pedal Tractor Pull again this year. It will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the fire station. The group also discussed participation in the Muscatine County Fair parade on July 11 in West Liberty as well as hosting the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull at the Fair. There is no charge for families to participate in either event.
The organization also discussed hosting the annual appreciation luncheon for West Liberty School District teachers and support personal to be held Friday, June 4, at the high school from noon-1:30 p.m..
The Lions will be offering a total of six education grants to worthy West Liberty High School graduating seniors, which they can use toward college or technical school education. Three of the grants will be awarded from the Lions and another three will be co-sponsored with the LULAC organization (League of United Latin American Citizens).
The Flags Over West Liberty program will open again this year beginning on Memorial Day weekend, May 29-31. The Lions are still accepting applications for households or businesses in the community to participate in the program to fly a flag on five different holidays including Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day. The next meeting of the Lions will be held Monday, May 10, beginning at 7 p.m. at the West Liberty Golf & Country Club.
