The West Liberty Lions Club is helping local students with hearing and sight problems while also looking for youths interested in attending the Lions Diabetes Camp this summer, it was learned Monday, March 22, through a Zoom meeting of members.

The ongoing program by the Lions to help provide hearing aids or eye glasses for students in the area whose family may be unable to afford them was highlighted at the meeting, noting anyone interested in learning more about the program should contact Lion Mike Duytschaver at 319-627-4457 or a school nurse.

Youths with diabetes may also be eligible this summer to attend a special camp in Iowa sponsored by the Lions. Again, contact Duytschaver or any Lion for more details. There is no cost to the family for sending the student to the camp.

Adults with vision or hearing problems and unable to afford health care can also get help from the Lions and can be referred from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

In other business, the Lions learned they will get help from members of the West Liberty High School FFA Chapter to place flags for their “Flags Over West Liberty” fundraising program.

The groups are working on putting together a schedule for the placement of flags at homes and businesses in the community during five special holidays – Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Veteran’s Day and Labor Day.

Anyone can still join the program by contacting any Lion or chairman Dean Beranek at 563-506-2665.

The Lions will also be installing new officers at their June meeting and president Duane Forbes is looking to fill officer and board positions.

The organization also helped with a food truck project tied to the League of United Latin American Citizens organization, which has been hosting monthly food campaigns in the community. The Lions pick up food in Iowa city and deliver it to designated food pantries in the area.

The group also donated cupcakes, napkins and bottled water for the National Honor Society ceremony held Tuesday, March 23. The group works with the local Rotary of West Liberty organization in sponsoring the special event at West Liberty High School.

The Lions were also asked to provide a pedal tractor and help conduct the youth pedal tractor pull for Atalissa Days in early June. The group discussed taking on the event and decided to move forward, Steve Burnett chairing the event and seeking four Lions to volunteer to help that day.

The Lions set their April meeting to be held live on Monday, April 12, at the West Liberty Golf & Country Club, to begin at 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in learning more about the Lions or attending the meeting should contact Forbes.
