Diego Hernández, senior en la West Liberty High School, continúa su carrera fultbolística después de la escuela secundaria.
Diego Hernández, hijo de Maria A. Flores y Felipe Hernández, es el hijo del medio de sus otros tres hermanos: Felipe Hernández (24), Araceli Hernández (21) y Oscar Hernández (15). La familia de Diego ha sido un gran rol en su éxito de fútbol.
Como dice Diego, ‘Han hecho y continuan hacer todo lo posible para darme las mejores oportunidades.’ Hernández ha sido un jugador de fútbol desde una edad temprana. Él afirma, ‘Mi pasión para fútbol siempre ha estado allí. Mi querer para fútbol solo ha crecido a lo largo de los años.’
Diego jugaba en el West Liberty Little League desde Kindergarten hasta el 2o grado. Desde el 3er grado a 7o grado, Hernández jugaba en el equipo de Kickers de West Liberty. En el siete grado, Diego Hernández se unió en su primer club de fútbol, Pearl City. Siguió jugando con Pearl City por los próximos dos años, un total de 4 temporadas, que se terminó al comienzo de su primer año en la secundaria.
Aunque la temporada de fútbol de su primer año de la escuela secundaria se canceló debido a Covid-19, la preservación de Hernández lo llevó a unirse con el equipo de CRSA de Cedar Rapids y jugar con ellos a lo largo de su segundo año en la secundaria.
Después de su primer temporada de jugar con el equipo varsity en la secundaria, Hernández volvió a jugar con Pearl City hasta su tercer año en la secundaria con el equipo de varsity. "Yo diría que mi tercer año jugando en la secundaria fue una temporada memorable para mí. Era cuando mi interés en las universidades y reconocimiento comenzó. Después de esa temporada de fútbol, realmente sentí que el trabajo que se estaba realizando finalmente estaba dando sus frutos.’ explicó Hernández. A lo largo de su carrera futbolística, Diego se ha desempeñado como capitán del equipo en varios equipos."
"Era el capitán del equipo con Pearl City. En mi primer año como jugador, que era realmente mi segundo año puesto que Covid-19 ascendió, yo era capitán asistente con Kevin Martinez como capitán del equipo. Tuve la suerte de usar la banda de capitán durante un par de juegos en ese temporada. Luego, en mi tercer año en la secundaria, yo fue nombrado capitán del equipo junto con Jahsiah Galván. Siempre he tratado de ser un líder en el equipo y ayudar a motivar a todos," afirma Hernández.
Después de la última temporada que jugó, Hernández decidió afiliarse con un nuevo club de fútbol, el FC United en Cedar Rapids y está actualmente entrenando para su última temporada de fútbol en la escuela secundaria en la primavera de 2023. Estoy deseando mucho para este próximo y último temporada de fútbol. Quiero divertirme y realmente disfrutar mucho de ella con el equipo y con amigos, pero lo que realmente deseo es tratar de jugar fútbol del estado una vez más y ojalá obtener ese título," dijo Hernández.
Diego está muy emocionado de ver lo que este próximo temporada tiene reservado para él y sus compañeros del equipo. Aunque sea su último temporada jugando fútbol en la secundaria, Diego continúa a establecer metas para él mismo, "Quiero hacer más goles que el año pasado y tratar de jugar fútbol del estado, pero realmente una meta para mí es tener diversión y disfrutar un último paseo con el equipo y los entrenadores con los que crecí con y he estado alrededor toda mi vida."
Hernández ha aprendido mucho sobre él mismo como un atleta y compañero de equipo. Cuando se le preguntó cual era su mayor desafío, él respondió, ‘Un gran desafío para mí es reconocer que soy un estudiante atleta y la vida no solo se trata de deportes y diversión. Hay veces que las responsabilidades de la vida es más importante que los deportes. Otro gran desafío que creo que se debe de hablar más es la salud mental. Cuidando a nosotros mismos es algo que se deber hacer. Ser un estudiante atleta puede ser drenante y difícil, pero sabiendo que hay maneras de mantenernos saludable es importante.’A pesar de las dificultades de equilibrar la vida personal y la vida atlética, las fortalezas de Diego como jugador de fútbol son querer lo mejor para él mismo y su equipo, ayudar a otros tener éxito, y superar las adversidades. "Nunca me rendiré. Siempre haré lo 100% de lo que puedo," dice Hernández. Diego ha demostrado una gran tenacidad y determinación a través de todos los aspectos de un jugador de fútbol y recientemente se ha comprometido con Wartburg.
"Me he comprometido con Wartburg para continuar mi educación y carrera deportiva. Me decidí con Wartburg porque me pareció la mejor opción para mí. La cantidad de interés del entrenador me hizo sentir muy deseado. Después de hacer una visita, conocí a muchos de los jugadores del equipo. Fueron muy acogedores y me trataron como si ya fuera parte del equipo aún antes de comprometerme. Me encantó el campus y está cerca de casa. Todo se marcó de mi lista," explicó Hernández.
Diego está muy agradecido y emocionado por tener la oportunidad de jugar fútbol en Wartburg. "Mi sueño siempre era poder jugar fútbol de un nivel universitario y he llegado allí," compartió Hernández.
Cuando se le preguntó qué le haya ayudado a convertirse en un mejor jugador de fútbol durante los muchos años que ha jugado el fútbol, Hernández respondió con: "Hay 100 diferentes respuestas para esta pregunta, pero creo que la parte más importante es querer hacer que mis padres se sientan orgullosos de mí."
La comunidad de West Liberty está muy emocionada de ver lo que la próxima temporada de fútbol en la primavera tiene reservado para los West Liberty High School Soccer Boys. Estarémos animando a los seniors ya que esta será el ultimo año jugando para los West Liberty Comets y les deseamos buena suerte a Diego Hernández en sus futuros esfuerzos en Wartburg.

Diego Hernández, son of Maria A. Flores and Felipe Hernández, is the middle child out of his three other siblings: Felipe Hernández (24), Araceli Hernández (21), and Oscar Hernández (15). Diego’s family has played a significant role in his success in soccer.
Diego shares, “They did and still do everything they can to give me the best opportunities.”
Hernández has been a soccer player for as long as he can remember. He states, “The love for soccer has always been there. My love for soccer has only grown over the years.”
Diego would play in the West Liberty Little League from kindergarten to second grade. From third to seventh grade, Hernández played in the Kickers' soccer team from West Liberty.
In seventh grade, Diego Hernández joined his first club team, Pearl City. He continued to play with Pearl City for the next two years, a total of four seasons, which would come to an end at the beginning of his freshman year.
Though his freshman-year soccer season was canceled due to Covid-19, Hernández’s perseverance led him to join the CRSA soccer club in Cedar Rapids and play there throughout his sophomore year.
After Hernández’s first high school varsity season, he returned to former club, Pearl City, where he played until his junior year varsity season. “I would say my most memorable season so far has been my junior year (2022). It’s when I started to get college interest and recognition. After that season, it really felt that the work that was being put in was finally paying off,” Hernández explained.
Throughout his soccer career, Diego has served as team captain in several teams. “At Pearl City, I was team captain a couple of times. In my first year - which was my sophomore year since Covid-19 hit- I was the assistant captain with Kevin Martinez being the Team Captain. I was fortunate enough to use the captain band during a couple of games that season. Then, in my junior year, I was named Team Captain alongside Jahsiah Galvan. I have always tried to be a leader on the team and help motivate everyone around me.” Hernández states. After the last season he performed, Hernández decided to join a new club, FC United in Cedar Rapids, and is currently in training for his last soccer season in high school in the spring of 2023. “I am looking forward to a lot in this next and last season of soccer. I want to have fun and really enjoy it with the team and friends…the thing I am mostly looking forward to is trying to make it to state one last time and hopefully shooting for the title,” Hernández said. Diego is thrilled to see what this next season has in store for him and his teammates.
Although it may be his last season in high school, Diego continues to set goals for himself as a soccer player, “I want to try to have more assists and goals than last year and try to make it to the all-state team, but really a goal for me is to have fun and enjoy one last ride with the team and coaches that I have grown with and have been around my whole life.” Hernández has learned so much about himself as an athlete and teammate. When asked what his biggest challenge as an athlete is, he answered, “A big challenge for me is realizing I’m a student-athlete and life isn’t all about sports and having fun. There are responsibilities in life that at times are more important than the sport. Another big challenge that I think needs to be talked about more is mental health. Taking care of ourselves is a big part that has to be done. Being a student-athlete can be very draining and difficult, but knowing there are ways to stay healthy is important.”
Despite the hardships of balancing his personal life and athletic life, Diego’s strengths as a soccer player are wanting the best for himself and the team, helping others succeed, and pushing through adversities. “...I will never quit. I will give it my 100% always,”Hernández shares.
Diego has shown great tenacity and determination through every aspect of being a soccer player and has recently committed to Wartburg. “I have committed to Wartburg College to further my education and athletic career. I decided on Wartburg because I found it the best fit for me. The amount of interest from the coach made me feel very wanted. After I took a visit, I met a lot of the guys on the team. They were very welcoming and treated me like I was already part of the team even before I committed to the school. I loved the campus and it was close to home. Everything checked off my list,” Hernández shared.
Diego is very appreciative and thrilled with the opportunity to play soccer at Wartburg. “My dream was always to be able to play at a collegiate level and I have gotten there,”Hernández explained.
When asked what has helped him become a better soccer player over the many years he has participated in soccer, Hernández replied, “There are 100 different answers to this question, but I think the most important part is wanting to make my parents proud.”
The West Liberty community is very excited to see what the upcoming spring soccer season has in store for the West Liberty soccer b==oys. We will be cheering for the seniors as this will be their last year playing for the West Liberty Comets and wishing Diego Hernández good luck on his future endeavors at Wartburg.
