Local West Liberty resident, Gary Daufeldt, has given $10,000 to the West Liberty School District athletic complex project. Daufeldt’s gift will help fund outdoor batting cages for baseball and softball fields.

“We had a great meeting with Gary Daufeldt,” said Shaun Kruger, superintendent. “These types of meetings are a great opportunity for me to meet residents and learn about West Liberty School District history.”

Daufeldt stated that he is happy to see a plan to bring all the facilities to one location.

“It will be so nice to have all the facilities close together and by the high school,” Daufeldt said. “I went to high school here and so did my kids and some of my grandchildren, along with lots of nieces and nephews. I’m proud of the school, but I agree that it’s time to update so we can keep up with our competition.”

Gary Daufeldt grew up on a farm south of Atalissa and played football and baseball in high school. He farmed and worked at HON Company in Muscatine until his retirement.

“I love hearing history about our athletics programs,” said Activities Director, Adam Loria. “Gary could only play football as a junior and senior because that’s when the Booster members started offering rides to rural students. It’s amazing to think of how far we’ve come and how much our kids have done with very little at times.”

The district is currently working on finalizing plans for the three new ball fields at the high school which will include a football/soccer field surrounded by an eight-lane track, softball field, baseball field. concession stand/press box, parking and more. Anyone wishing to learn more should contact the West Liberty Community School District office on Elm Street.
