West Liberty’s girls’ golf team won its first dual meet of the season when it defeated Iowa City Regina 222-263 last Monday (April 14) at West Liberty Country Club.
The Comets had the top three scorers at this nine-hole meet with senior Addison Beaver receiving medalist honors with her round of 49.
Sophomore Kamryn Gilmore was one stroke behind her with a 50. Senior Sophie Buysse was third overall with a 57.
Just four Comets teed it up, but senior Maggie Mahoney had a solid fourth score with a 66.
Iowa City Regina’s best score came from sophomore Mel Kirk who shot a 61.
West Liberty traveled to Tipton for a meet on April 21. Later this week, the girls will compete in the Golden Hawk Invitational at Kalona Golf Course.
It is a 10 team meet featuring Durant, Fairfield, Keokuk, Mid-Prairie, Iowa City Regina, Tipton, West Branch, West Liberty, Williamsburg and Wilton.
The Comet boys did not have as much luck against the Regals, falling in their dual 164 to 199.
All six Regals finished in the top six scoring spots for the meet. Leading the way as medalist was Wyatt Kaeding with a 39.
West Liberty’s best golfers on this day were sophomore Ryan Laughlin (47), sophomore Cole Wagamon (48) and junior Cody Seiler.
Rounding out the lineup was junior John Daufeldt (53), sophomore Kaden Wiele (53) and sophomore Landon Wainwright (55).
The boys got another opportunity to improve their scores the next day at the Golden Hawk Invitational. There, the Comets placed sixth out of nine schools with a team score of 382.
West Branch won the 18-hole meet with a 332 team score. The next best teams were Mount Vernon (348), Wilton (349), Mid-Prairie (350) and Mediapolis (364).
Seiler placed inside the top 10 of this meet with a solo eighth place finish and round of 87.
Wainwright was the next-best with a score of 97 and a solo 29th place finish. Other Comets teeing it up at this meet were Laughlin (T31 — 99), Daufeldt (T31 — 99), Wagamon (T35 — 101) and Wiele (44th place — 115).
The Comet boys faced Tipton at home on Monday and, like the girls, will also see tournament action this week.
West Liberty will travel east to play at the Wildcat Invitational at Wahkonsa Country Club.
This is also a 10-team invitational featuring Calamus-Wheatland, Camanche, Columbus, Durant, Louisa-Muscatine, Mid-Prairie, Tipton, West Branch, West Liberty and Wilton.
