Golf tournament returns for 18th year

An 18-year tradition will continue at the end of this this month.

The West Liberty Chamber of Commerce golf tournament will return Thursday, Aug. 25, to the West Liberty Country Club, said West Liberty Chamber of Commerce Director Charles Brooke. Sign-in will start at 1 p.m. Tee off will be at 2 p.m.

“This year we will be going all in with ‘West Liberty Pride,’” Brooke said. “Theoretically, that’s our theme so we’re pushing the school district. We’re pushing everything West Liberty.”

Team registration is due by the end of this week so he can give the country club the head count for the dinner provided following the tournament, he added. If you would like to attend the dinner and not golf there is a fee. You can reserve your spot by e-mailing Brooke.

“But again, if you don’t golf, come and have some food,” Brooke said.

A raffle will be held that afternoon including a new golf bag from West Liberty Foods, eight golf clubs custom made to fit you from Golf USA and a couple of other items, he added.

“I hope to get the baskets by the second week of August so I can start showcasing them,” Brooke said.

Money raised from the golf tournament will go toward the chamber’s beautification project, which includes banners, the flower baskets and overall upkeep.

“That’s why we’re selling ornaments as well so we can keep money coming in and fundraise,” Brooke said. “We’re just trying to make sure we keep West Liberty going and keep having events coming in and out because truly after this our next big event is the holiday open house, which is in November.”

West Liberty Chamber of Commerce Board President Kara Kruse hasn’t golfed in the golf tournament before but has helped with the day’s events.

“I did get to supervise the “Hole in One” hole last year and had a blast,” Kruse said. “All the teams that came through were having so much fun challenging each other to make it in one shot. It was fun to hear them discuss different strategies and cheer each other on.”

The longevity of the golf tournament Kruse feels is due to the fact that residents and Chamber members look forward to participating in the tournament each year.

“It’s a fun way for everyone to get involved and raise money for the West Liberty Chamber of Commerce,” she said. “They know that the funds we raise will go toward supporting our Chamber member businesses and ultimately help West Liberty to thrive.”

The golf tournament is also a great way for local businesses to market themselves to each other by providing swag bag items, raffle items or prizes for the tournament, Kruse added.

“The Chamber wouldn’t exist without our members and we need to support them today and everyday,” she added.
