Girls wrestling team improving in every match

The West Liberty Girls wrestling team took to the mats at Highland High School in Riverside, Friday, Jan. 6. The Comets crowned five bracket champions and an additional five runners up.

Among the Champions were Jacky Molina, who pinned her way through her bracket.

Mercedes Brocket pinned her way through her bracket for several wins. Dionni Garcia-Vasquez who racked up three pins. Amerie Alvarado who also recorded three pins. Nellie Stagg captured her bracker with a pin and a pair of decision victories.

Alissa Sanchez recorded a pair of pins before being pinned in the championship match to take second place. Silvia Garcia Vasquez won her opener, fell in her second round match and won by pin in her second place match.

Kiley Collins recorded a pair of falls before losing by pin in the championship match. Ashley Gallardo lost her opener by decision before capturing a pair of wins by decision to capture second place. Vivian Cardona won by pin in her opener before falling by fall and capturing another win by fall. Katherin Barton and Alyssa Lenz captured third and Ava Morrison and Charli Gingerich placed fourth.

The Comets will head to Mid-Prairie Saturday, Jan. 14, before heading to Wilton next Tuesday.

Head coach Dillon Christensen said this season, especially since its the first is for the team, is going well.

"We have only had a handful of duals this year. We have mainly been wrestling in individual tournaments where we have had a few top five team finishes," he said.

Every time his team takes to the mat, he sees improvement from the last wrestling meet.

"We have seen amazing improvements," Christensen said.
