Girls wrestling team a force to reckon with

The West Liberty girls wrestling team has made magic on the mat to kick off the 2022-2023 season, capturing a sixth place team finish along with a trio of bracket champions last week at Marion High School. They continued their success Friday at Central DeWitt, capturing a team third, crowning two point scoring champions and three overall.

Saturday, Dec. 10, the Comets took to the mats at Marion High school. Silvia Garcia-Vazquez, Ava Morrison and Dionni Garcia-Vazquez were crowned the champions of their brackets.

Silvia Garcia-Vazquez won her opener by fall in 1:54 and second round match by fall in 1:57 before receiving a medical forfeit in the championship match.

Morrison captured a win by fall in her opening match, followed by a 3-2 decision before pinning her opponent in the championship match.

Dionni Garcia-Vazquez pinned her way through her bracket to slide through as the Comets final bracket champion.

The Comets had two more chances at championships, with Ashley Gallardo and Nellie Stagg both falling in their final matches. The Comets added five additional medalists who finished third in their respective groups.

The Comets continued their season at Central DeWitt on Friday as Ava Morrison and Dionni Garcia-Vazquez stood on the podium once again in points scoring competition and Mercedes Brockert captured another bracket championship.

Morrison, 18 - 1 this season, received a first round bye and pinned her opponent in the second round in 1:51. A 7 - 5 decision in the championship match put her over the top, scoring 22 points for the Comets.

Garcia-Vazquez once again pinned her way through her bracket, capturing another tournament title and improving to 20 - 3 on the season.

Brockert matched her teammate before her, pinning her way through her bracket, the quickest of which coming in 54 seconds, to capture her bracket in a non-points scoring effort.

Alyssa Lenz and Katherine Barten placed second. An additional trio of Comets stood third as the Comets tallied 106 team points in the outing.

The Comets will return to action in the New Year with trips to Wapello on Jan. 3 and Williamsburg Jan. 5.
