Girls win pair of games - Comets beat Wilton, Mid-Prairie

The West Liberty High School Girls’ basketball team returned to their winning ways this week after toppling the neighboring rival Wilton Beavers, 75-54, before beating Mid-Prairie, 66-48, during this past week of action.

The Comets played host to the Beavers Tuesday, Jan. 12, and wasted no time establish their offense, jumping ahead 24-10 in the opening period. The Comets didn’t get complacent with their lead as they continued to apply pressure to the Beavers and headed into the locker room leading 41-19.

The Beavers outscored the Comets 19-16 in the third period but it would prove to be too little too late as the Comets would go on to close out the ball game, 75-54.

Sophomore Finley Hall led Comet scoring with an impressive 30 points while she also pulled down seven rebounds and had six assists and as many steals.

Macy Daufeldt and Sailor Hall put up 16 each in the winning effort. Daufeldt also had four rebounds and as many steals, plus two assists and a block while Sailor Hall added six assists,five steals and three rebounds to her total.

Averi Goodale also hit double figures with 10 for the Comets while pulling down a team high eight rebounds to go along with four steals and an assist. Janey Gingerich rounded out Comet scoring with three points and eight offensive rebounds.

On Friday, the Comets headed to Wellman to take on the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. Having already gotten the better of Mid-Prairie once this season, the Comets looked to build upon their previous success and continue their win streak.

The teams would do battle in the opening quarter, trading blows before the Comets emerged with a 16-13 lead. The game remained close throughout the remainder of the half, but the Comets were able to create separation before heading into the locker room, leading 31-23.

The Comets outscored the Golden Hawks 20-7 coming out of the locker room and put a bow on the season sweep, 66-48.

Janey Gingerich led Comet scoring with 19 points, including four from behind the arch. She also pulled down six rebounds, had three blocks and pair of steals to help lift her team to victory.

A trio of Comets all tied with 15 points as Sailor Hall, Finley Hall and Macy Daufeldt all hit double-figures while Daufeldt also had eight rebounds, five steals and an assist to round out her night.

Sailor Hall also had eight rebounds to go with three assists and as many steals. Finley Hall grabbed six rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Martha Pace pulled down three offensive rebounds for the Comets and scored a point while Sammi Goodale rounded out scoring for the Comets with a point and a rebound.

Overall, the Comets improved to 8-3 on the season and 8-2 in conference play. The Comets will head to North Cedar Friday to play the 0-13 Knights before hosting Monticello Tuesday.
