Girls' track team finishes sixth in M-P Hawk Relays

The West Liberty High School girls’ track team competed on Thursday in Wellman at the Hawk Relays, hosted by Mid-Prairie.

The Comets opened the evening with a third place finish in the 4 x 100 Shuttle Hurdle Relay with a team that included Sydney Rivera, Rylee Goodale and Laney Esmoil finishing in 1:13.57, about two seconds behind the winning team from Alburnett at 1:11.44.

Esmoil and Rivera finished third and fourth respectively for West Liberty in the 100-meter hurdles, Esmoil competing the event in 17.49 seconds while Rivera was clocked at 17.60.

Freshman Pearson Hall grabbed a podium finish in the long jump, leaping 15-8.5 while Esmoil was ninth with a leap of 14-6.

Senior Grace Evans also finished seventh for the Comets in the shot put, tossing the ball 29-5.5 before taking sixth in the discuss with a toss of just over 95 feet,

To cap the night, the Comets grabbed second place finish in the 1600-meter Medley Relay for coach Michael Hart. The team finished in 4:51.44, about 10 seconds behind the winning Pekin team and seven seconds ahead of third place Mediapolis. There were eight teams in the event.

Overall, the Comets scored 38 points and placed sixth as a team in the meet, which was won by Mid-Prairie with 152 points while Fairfield finished with 109 and Pekin followed with 102. There were 10 teams competing in the meet.

The Comets return to the oval Tuesday in Anamosa for a 4:15 p.m. outing before Macy Daufeldt takes to the blue track at Drake University over the weekend, participating in the Drake Relays.

The senior will compete in the prelims of the 100 meter hurdles beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, with the finals set for 10:30 a.m. Daufeldt will also compete in the long jump, which starts at 9:30 a.m.

No results were reported for high school boys track, which was to compete in Anamosa last Tuesday, April 28. The team is scheduled to host a home meet this Friday in West Branch for coach Gus Garcia.
