Girls' soccer team opens season with 8-0 defeat

Posted

The West Liberty High School girls’ soccer team kicked off their 2022 campaign on a cold, windy day in Vinton Tuesday evening, March 29, calling 8-0 to the host Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes.

The Comets, who went 4-10 last season, loaded up the bus and headed north up I-380 to find the host Vikettes coming out of the gates swinging, finding the back on the net for their first goal in the fourth minute to take an early 1-0 advantage.

The V-S defense stiffled the Comet offense, who struggled to advance the ball past midfield before the Vikettes scored their second goal in the 13th minute to take a 2-0 advantage and then put another into the net before the halftime break.

The Vikettes offense found its stride in the second half, scoring five times and cruising to an 8-0 advantage over the Comets in their disappointing season opener for coach Manuel Machado’s young team.

The Comets will host Tipton this Friday and Wapello Monday, April 11, before heading to Northeast Tuesday, April 12. All games start at 5 p.m.
