Girls set up opportunity to play in Regional finals

The West Liberty High School Comets girls volleyball team, riding on a 24-6 season record, took advantage of playing in their home gym for the final time in the 2020 campaign to advance to the Regional finals.
Coach Ruben Galvan’s Comets advanced one step closer to a return to the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids following their 3-0 sweep over the Central Lee Hawks Wednesday night, Oct. 21.
The Comets faced their toughest challenge of the night in the opening set but put the Hawks away with a 25-19 win. The Comets settled in during the second set to capture the win 25-15 before closing out the night with a 25-14 victory in the final set.
West Liberty senior Martha Pace led the team with 17 digs on the night to go along with 12 kills. Fellow seniors Averi Goodale and Isabel Morrison both recorded five kills apiece in their final appearance in the West Liberty High School gym as Comets. Goodale also added two aces fro the serving line for the winners. Junior Macy Daufeldt led the offensive charge for the Comets with 17 kills, due in part from the help she got from Brooklyn Buysse’s 38 assists.
West Liberty defeated Anamosa in three straight sets in the first round of the Regional tournament early last week.The Comets traveled to Tipton high school for their regional final match against the Davenport Assumption Knights Tuesday night, Oct. 27, with the winner of that matchup advancing to the state finals at the U.S. Cellular Center beginning Monday, Nov. 2 and running through Thursday, Nov. 5.
