The Mississippi River flooding will be the topic on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m. at Discovery Park Shelter. Paul Mayes, retired MCC instructor, and Brian Ritter, Executive Director of Nahant Marsh and the Program Director for Conservation Technology through the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) and the Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center (ATEEC), will speak on the impact of river flooding on natural areas.
Floods occurred many times between 2008-2020, costing billions of dollars. Property damage impacts people the most. Land use changes, storm water flows, along with wet winters and springs result in increased flooding. But natural areas and its wildlife fall victim to floods, too. Flooding alters water quality by increased pollution and sedimentation.
Public lands offer access to outdoor recreation. Floods cause parks and recreation areas to close and damage roads and camping areas. Flooding impacts the habitat of fish and wild animals with pollution from waste-water discharge and increased water volume.
The League of Women Voters of Muscatine County invites the public to attend this presentation on Aug. 25, 5:30 p.m., at Discovery Park Shelter. Participants are encouraged to wear a mask, and bring something to eat, drink and possibly a lawn chair.
